Carcinogens

Can the very food that we eat cause us cancer? Many would disagree but the fact is that carcinogens (substances that cause a normal cell to change into a cancerous cell) creep in unnoticed into one's daily food in many different insidious ways.

How to Get Started with Raw Food when you Haven't Got A Clue! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator

If you're new to raw foods you may have noticed that even though there are now hundreds, if not thousands of raw food web sites on the internet, what seems to be lacking is real basic nuts-and-bolts info about how to get going from a standing start. Only too often do books and web sites jump in at step 2 or 3 (food or equipment) before setting the context in which raw food needs to be placed, or explaining how to get going when everything about raw food is new. And what newbies want to know of course is: 'How can I do this?'.

Now, even if you feel that you're personally beyond what you'll learn about here, this information may well be perfect to pass on to a friend or family member who is struggling to comprehend just what you've been getting so excited about, or who may want to hear it from someone other than you! (Don't worry, mine are like that too!). Either way, the information that follows is well worth a read as you may just get a little boost of much-needed inspiration.

1. Understand what all the fuss is about. The concept of eating raw food isn't new by any means, but it has gained much greater popularity during recent times owing to its unquestionable benefits on health, energy and overall vitality, as well as its ability to basically make us look and feel a whole lot better than we've ever done before. As old as time itself, raw food was, of course, what we ate before fire was discovered (we must have done OK on it to get that far ;) and more recently, thanks to the efforts of pioneering authors such as health researcher Leslie Kenton and others who bravely waved the flag for raw food in the 1980's and beyond, we now find ourselves in an era where raw food is no longer seen as the domain of extreme health "fanatics" but instead merrily making its way into the mainstream media, celebrity diets, healing centers and retreats, increasing numbers of health and nutrition books, products and seminars, as well as featuring more significantly in supermarkets, health food stores and much more besides. And not a moment before time - because when you look at it up close and personal, it really does make a whole lot of sense...

2. So why raw? While I'm the first to admit that the word "raw" is hardly inspiring, if you can get beyond that and see that raw equals pure, fresh, vibrant, enzyme-rich, oxygen-rich, unadulterated, whole organic living nutrition then we'll all be on the same page! But before we get to the whys exactly, and to prevent ourselves from falling into the common trap of seeing raw food as somehow "less than" cooked, let's take a moment to look at what cooked food is, exactly.

Cooked food: Natural food which has been processed and/or heated to high temperatures where chemical changes have occurred and the food has changed from its original state to something which, depending on the severity of its treatment, can end up looking like a very pale shadow of its former self (think of spinach cooked and raw!). While cooked foods may most certainly tantalize the taste buds, this is largely because of their stimulant effects on the body which - in actual fact - doesn't actually "understand" a lot of what it's taken in as many of the chemicals within cooked foods are unnatural and therefore the body sees them as foreign bodies! Indeed, fascinating research in the 1930's showed that when someone eats cooked food without having eaten some raw food first, the body sends the white blood cells (which fight toxins) to the digestive system in order to deal with the perceived "invader". Interesting, don't you think? And while yes, we can glean nutrition from this fractured, denatured "food", every time we cook our food or buy something pre-prepared and cooked in a can, box or bag we lose up to 70% of the vitamins, some of the minerals, all of the enzymes, all of the oxygen, the important plant feel-good hormones and a high percentage of the water - all of which we need to reward us with truly vibrant health. So that's cooked food! Doesn't seem quite as attractive when we look at it that way does it?! Raw food by contrast is replete with everything that enabled it to sprout and grow in the first place - life force, enzymes, water, oxygen, hormones, vitamins and minerals and so much more besides. Untouched, untainted, raw food is quite literally honest food - what you see is what you get. No hidden ingredients, nothing messed around with, just pure delicious fresh live food that we are designed to eat - living food for living bodies. And the good news for you is this: when you start dabbling with more raw food, you don't just understand this conceptually, you actually start to "get it" experientially as your whole body cheers, shifts up a gear and the concept of what real food and nutrition really is about takes on a whole new meaning.

3. What foods are raw? To give you a brief overview of what raw food means in real terms, here's a list of the 20+ different raw food groups: Fresh fruits; Vegetables; Salad vegetables; Leafy green vegetables; Herbs and wild greens; Nuts; Dried fruits; Beans, pulses and legumes (sprouted); Grains (sprouted); Seeds; Sprouting seeds; Indoor greens; Vegetable seeds (sprouted); Edible flowers; Mushrooms; Sea vegetables; Algaes; Oils; Stimulants (e.g. chili, ginger, onion); Spices; Super foods; Flavorings and natural sweeteners (e.g. honey, stevia, carob). Rather more variety than perhaps you first thought? Rather than being limiting, I have found that 99 times out of 100 raw food expands a person's culinary horizons - and if you pick up a good raw food recipe book, I promise you'll be blown away at what can be achieved - "burgers", pizzas, live milks, ice-cream, cakes, cookies, smoothies, soups, dips, dressings, lasagnas, wraps, crackers and so much more are possible when you know what you're doing - now we're talking, right?!

4. How to get started. A new but extremely common myth that I'm very keen to bust is that eating raw takes lots of time and energy to prepare. Wrong! I am quite possibly the busiest person I know, and one of the many reasons I choose to eat raw is because when done correctly it's actually the fastest food on the planet. Getting started and keeping it doable is easy when you adopt the pure and simple approach: whole raw foods, prepared quickly, eaten simply and you must only eat the foods you love! This must always be fun, easy and delicious - that's rule number one! Rather surprisingly to those new to raw food, the discovery process of what raw food is really all about is a never ending journey - the kind of journey that everyone I've ever met wished they had embarked upon sooner. So don't wait to get ill, overweight or lethargic before you start tending to your body's dietary needs (like I did) - start your journey to exciting and rewarding pastures new today! These first steps I'm about to outline are very straightforward but will make a massive difference - and even better, anyone can do this!

First, try your best to eat fresh fruit or a dairy-free smoothie for breakfast every day instead of your usual toast, cereal or coffee. Eat or drink as much as you want (of the raw stuff) but keep it clean. What you eat first sets you up for the day - so make sure you step out on high-energy, revitalizing foods rather than charred bread, lifeless sugar-coated grains or caffeine-laden hot drinks! For lunch and dinner, this is so easy. If you can make at least half of your plate consist of fresh living foods (salads, nuts, seeds, sprouted seeds, beans or any of the foods mentioned above in point 3 - but not all of them!!) then you'll be doing fantastically well and will typically start to feel the difference within a matter of days (look forward to more energy, better sleep, clearer thinking and clearer skin). Improve your results even further by drinking as much pure water as possible, eat only when hungry and not beyond full, and keep the remainder of your food as whole and pure as possible (no e-numbers or hydrogenated fats and so forth) and you will feel the benefits all the more. Also, of the raw foods you do choose, make sure that most of them are fruits and vegetables as these are the most nutritious and the highest in water content. Handfuls of nuts just don't work the same - they're very dense and fatty, but in small amounts are very good for you. If you can put most or all of the above into practice then you'll be amazed at the difference!

5. What you need and where to get it. Raw recipe books tend to focus on the more complicated dishes and therefore often fancy foods and equipment are utilized as part of the recipe creation - but don't be put off, raw food prep doesn't have to be complicated or expensive! While it's by no means imperative that you own every kitchen gadget going, it really does help to own at the very least a tabletop blender, a cheap juicer and a basic food processor. If budget is an issue then a good sharp knife will take you a long way for free! However with the three items listed new and exciting vistas will open up to you, and if and when the time feels right to invest in something more durable and powerful then you'll be amazed at what's available in the health world right now.(See the Healthmakers link on the front page of this website)

As for foods, I personally find that I can get most of what I need in the organic section at my local supermarket, and I also visit a local organic farm shop for the really good stuff that no supermarket can compete with in price or quality. If I didn't have a good supermarket then I'd opt for an organic box delivery service which can be wonderful (Contact me for details if you live in Cape Town) Most of my specialized items such as truly raw olives (most are pasteurized), nut "butters" (they're made from just pure ground nuts but spread like butter), Superfoods and flavorings I buy from Souring Free Superfoods or one of the excellent Health Shops in and around Cape Town.

But what I do need to emphasize if you haven't cottoned on already is the importance of choosing organic - pesticides are never a healthy option, even if they are on raw food!

6. How to keep it interesting. When you're new to raw food it's easy to assume that salads, soups and smoothies is as good as it gets when you're watching the clock. While it's true that the more elaborate recipes often do take more time and energy, there are always short cuts and whipping up a delicious dressing, dip or even a nut "cheese" or veggie pate takes literally seconds and can totally transform a meal! When you've tasted a fabulous raw food pizza, delicious soft-centered raw chocolates and raw ice-cream (no dairy, no white sugar), there really is no going back!

7. What about eating out? This is one of the most common questions asked - and the answer is - it's completely up to you. You can choose to eat "normally", to make healthier choices than usual or to ask for a juicy salad with all sorts of things thrown in, but above all, enjoy what you eat and feel at peace with it!

8. Does it have to be all or nothing? Not at all! Until very recent times very few people ate an exclusively raw food diet ongoing. In fact most people today still dabble for weeks, months or even years at a time until they feel inclined to "up the ante"! Also, nowadays people tend to talk in percentage terms - such as "I'm 80% raw" which basically means that they eat most of their food raw but not all of it, and they're guessing that 80% is about right in terms of plate space/ meal make-up etc. - but it's not really that important. What matters more is the quality of the food you choose - if 80% of someone's diet consists of nuts, seeds and raw food snack bars then that's never going to be a good thing (way too much fat!) whereas 80% worth of fresh fruits and vegetables is wonderful! What also matters is not just what you bring into your diet but what you leave out. It's no good eating lots of fresh vibrant food if you "balance" it out with take-always and aspartame-ridden diet drinks! Much better to do 50/50 and make all of your foods good healthy choices, and then if you want to adjust the proportion of raw foods then you can do so at any time. All that said, the more raw food you eat, for most people at least (those with medical issues need to take professional advice), the better you will look and feel - and here's why.

9. What you can expect. When you choose raw, as we have already seen, you choose "life". Live food will nourish you at a deep level (deeper than any oven-baked pizza will ever reach!) and it will also start to work its magic on your body in a very short space of time. This magic sometimes doesn't look so magical though! Because as the toxins and debris begin to leave your body as the raw food starts to cleanse your system, you may experience some detoxification symptoms such as diarrhea, rashes, pimples (spots), headaches, dizziness, coughing and mucous and other similar discomforts. This is usually nothing to worry about, but it may happen! If it does, keep drinking plenty of water and eat even more simply to speed the elimination process up if your circumstances permit it. But if you feel as if it's all going a bit too fast for you then if you eat something cooked, especially something heavy like meat, potatoes or dairy, then you'll slow it all down or even stop it completely. You can restart again more slowly or leave it for a few days or weeks and go again when the time feels right. On the flipside, the good news is that when this stuff comes out it means that your body is - of course - all the better for it and this will start to become apparent in your face, your body shape and body tone and your energy levels surprisingly quickly. And if you carry on the good work to any degree for more than a few weeks, then you'll find it very hard to go back to your old ways because there's really not a lot of fun to be had there. In fact most people find that very quickly cooked food starts to taste seriously bland and inferior to fresh and raw - especially if they've educated themselves in those delicious raw food recipes I keep alluding to!

10. Taking it further. As mentioned before, the raw food journey never ends, but it does get increasingly rewarding and exciting! Not only is there a whole new world of food and drink waiting for you (which is growing fast), but raw food tends to attract some pretty amazing people and takes you on an exciting adventure in terms of getting more in touch with your body and your whole self generally.

Wherever your interest in raw food takes you, what I can guarantee is that you'll be very glad you took the time to investigate it, because you'll be amazed at how your relationship with food and your body changes and you'll be beyond fascinated at what you discover along the way.

Nutritional Individuality PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Wednesday, 22 September 2010 11:40

I have read quite a few testimonials from people who have a lived raw-food-dominant-lifestyle, some of them for many years, and have walked away, claiming that the lifestyle was not good for their health, whereas the overwhelming majority of people living a raw-food-dominant-lifestyle have never been healthier in their lives. Have you ever wondered why?

I believe that the concept of nutritional individuality is key to understanding why any given diet might not work so well. The various dietary systems, prescriptions, or “one-size-fits-all” approaches are very limiting – first because many diets are not composed of organically grown, living foods; secondly, because we all have unique nutritional needs bases, in some part, on our genetic inheritance. In reality, one size can never possibly work for all, even if your diet is raw-food-dominant.

Genetic inheritance can be translated as: How are my various metabolic systems predisposing me to need certain foods rather than others? It could also translate as: how does this “metabolic individuality” of mine produce, for example, an alkaline response from a certain food when my wife gets an acid result from the same food?

The advancing wave of knowledge about the human genome has confirmed that each of us must be genetically unique in our nutritional needs. Individuality, which has formed a fundamental part of holistic healing systems for thousands of years, still retains its traditional significance in Ayurvedic medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. In the West also, individuality has been a central part of holistic healing systems from the time of Hippocrates and Galen. However, the introduction of reductionist science in the West and the subsequent demise of holistic healing traditions has seen individuality become of diminishing importance over the past 300 years.

The persistence with which modern science has sought to homogenize the entire human race has displaced any serious interest in individuality. It is often taken for granted that the human population is made up of individuals who exhibit average physiologic requirements and that a minor proportion of this population is composed of those whose requirements may be considered to deviate excessively. Actually there is little justification in nutritional thinking for the concept that a representative sample of Homo sapiens is one who has average requirements with respect to all essential nutrients and thus exhibits no unusually high or low needs. In the light of contemporary genetic and physiologic knowledge and the statistical interpretations thereof, the typical individual is more likely to be one who has average needs with respect to many essential nutrients but who also exhibits some nutritional requirements for a few essential nutrients which are far from average."

Just as we each have a unique fingerprint and appearance, we also have a unique response to food. The various control systems of your body dictate how well you function, and each of these systems are impacted in different ways by the foods you eat. Knowing one’s individual metabolic tendencies can truly make a huge difference for wellness – The answer is an individualized, raw-foods-dominant-diet.

Research strongly suggests that food is not the sole determinant of acid or alkaline effects in the body. It is, rather, the dominant regulatory or metabolic system of the individual that really determines whether specific nutrients including vitamins and minerals will produce an acid or alkaline response in the body. There is, within the dominant metabolic system of a given individual, also a range or tendency to constitutionally be more acidic or alkaline.

It is critical that we help the body maintain its proper blood pH. The range is an extremely narrow one – between 7.3 and 7.5, which is slightly alkaline, for optimal health to flourish.

The usual advice is to “listen to your body” and act in accordance with that. What happens if you don’t know how to “listen to your body”? Well, if you are inclined to be your own scientist you can test your alkalinity using pH–testing paper, available at any pharmacy. The recommended method is to collect urine samples in the same container, over a 24 hour period, beginning with the second urine of the morning and ending with the first urine of the following morning. Dip a piece of the pH paper in the urine. This will tell you the average effect that your diet is having on pH and will allow you to modify the diet and see the effects of these modifications on pH. This can produce insight toward understanding which mix of foods (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) best balances the pH for you.

Another common problem is burnout. The options in a raw-food-dominant- diet are almost endless. The internet is flooded with recipes and new books come out every week. Quality of food is critical; however, quantity and frequency also carry critical influence – especially when we take into account possible underlying , individual, metabolic influences. I strongly suggest rotating the recipes with regard to ingredients. The recipe rotation concept is based on preparing meals from one large set of foods for two or three weeks and then rotating to another set of foods for the same period. The recipe rotation can be as informal or as finely tuned as your needs dictate.

Let’s have a look at nutritional individuality from another view; that of brain response. Food placed in the mouth evokes a brain response that is instantaneous, either for good or ill. This means that your brain immediately signals your digestive system if food passes this brain response, to go-ahead and process and assimilate the food. However, if the food evokes a negative response from the bio-mind the signal goes forth immediately to neutralize and eliminate the substance as completely and quickly as possible. This brain response is quite subtle. If we look at the way most adults and older children eat, without regard to uplifting or optimally healthful nutrition, it is easy to see how this initial response to incompatible food is missed or ignored.

To summarize, an enormous potential for difference in nutritional needs exist from person to person along with differences in the ability to digest and assimilate the needed foods. Nutritional individuality needs to be discovered through our own experimentation. This will foster an awareness of which foods are more compatible. Raw foods have the highest probability of being “right” for the widest range of nutritional needs.

In preparing this essay I made liberal use of the Collected Essays on Health and Bioenergetic Nutrition by Michael Chrisemer, N.C. I also used a paper by E. M. Widdowson DSc titled Nutritional Individuality.

Raw Food Diet: What Percent Raw Do We Have to Eat to be Considered a Raw Foodist?

The word "percent", has been mentioned continuously in the raw food world. We hear it all the time - 100% raw, 90% raw, or 75% raw...

Sometimes it’s as if 100% is some kind of a destination, and once we get there, its Hooray, but it’s almost a shame if we ever leave.

Raw Cacao PDF Print E-mail

Why should you only eat chocolate made from raw organic cacao?

Concentrated nutrients - because raw cacao is concentrated 'raw power', RAW cacao powder has at least 33% more of many of cacao's most vital nutrients! In Raw Cacao Powder, much of the oil is removed, while nearly all of the active nutrients remain. For example:

●Cacao is remarkably rich in magnesium. Cacao seems to be the #1 source of magnesium of any food. This is likely the primary reason women crave chocolate during the menstrual cycle. Magnesium balances brain chemistry, builds strong bones, and combats depression.

Cacao is the richest food source of magnesium of any common food. Magnesium is the number one mineral that assists and supports healthy heart functioning. Magnesium is the most deficient major mineral on the Standard American Diet (SAD); over 80% of Americans are chronically deficient in Magnesium!

●Cacao contains subtle amounts of caffeine and theobromine. However, experiments have shown that these stimulants are far different when consumed raw than cooked.  Consider the following: Experimental provings of chocolate by homeopaths indicate its stimulating effect when cooked. One experiment conducted with a decoction of roasted ground cacao beans in boiling water produced an excitement of the nervous system similar to that caused by black coffee, an excited state of circulation, and an accelerated pulse. Interestingly, when the same decoction was made with raw, un-roasted beans neither effect was noticeable, leading the researchers to conclude that the physiological changes were caused by aromatic substances released during roasting.

●Cacao seems to diminish appetite, probably due to its monoamine oxidase enzyme inhibitors (MAO inhibitors) - these are different from digestive enzyme inhibitors found in most nuts and seeds. These rare MAO inhibitors actually produce favorable results when consumed by allowing more serotonin and other neurotransmitters to circulate in the brain. According to Dr. Gabriel Cousens, MAO inhibitors facilitate youth regeneration and rejuvenation. Raw cacao encourages weight loss naturally.

●Phenylethylamine (PEA) is found in chocolate. PEA is an adrenal-related chemical that is also created within the brain and released when we are in love. This is one of the reasons why love and chocolate have a deep correlation. PEA also plays a role in increasing focus and alertness.  Researchers have discovered that phenylethylamine (PEA) has a positive effect in enhancing feelings of love. And Chocolate has been proven to be an excellent source of PEA.

●Anandamide (The Bliss Chemical) - A neurotransmitter called anandamide, has been isolated in cacao. Anandamide is also produced naturally in the brain. Anandamide is known as "The Bliss Chemical" because it is released while we are feeling great. Cacao contains enzyme inhibitors that decrease our bodies' ability to breakdown anandamide. This means that natural anandamide and/or cacao anandamide may stick around longer, making us feel good longer, when we eat cacao.

●Antioxidants keep you looking young and help fight disease.  One kg of Raw Organic Cacao Powder delivers 433,570 ORAC Antioxidant units. ORAC antioxidant laboratory analysis confirms that there are over 25,200 antioxidants in a single spoonful of our raw cacao powder!  Dark chocolate has been touted as a source of antioxidants, but this raw chocolate is way beyond that. Living proof that raw is better!

Italian researchers found eating 100 grams of dark chocolate each day for 15 days lowered blood pressure in the 15-person study. The University of L'Aquila team also found the body's ability to metabolise sugar -- a problem for people with diabetes -- was improved. Because the effect was believed to be due to antioxidant levels, with Raw Cacao Powder we can likely multiply this effect.

Dutch researchers indicate that dark chocolate contains four times the amount of catechin antioxidants than black tea, which is suspected of having a protective effect against heart disease and possibly cancer, due to its antioxidant properties. With Raw Cacao Powder, it would be 28 times more than Black Tea and potentially 7 times the protection!

In trials, doctors at Harvard found that Antioxidant compounds called Flavonols in chocolate help the body to produce nitric oxide, a compound essential for proper heart function. (Nitric oxide is also believed by pro bodybuilders to help increase muscularity.) Again, with Raw Cacao Powder, this effect could easily be multiplied.  Remember that raw cacao powder contains about seven times as many antioxidants as cooked cacao powder, that's about 723% more!

The amino acid Tryptophan is found naturally in cacao. Tryptophan enhances relaxation and promotes better sleep. Now you'll get at least 33% more when you use Raw Cacao Powder!

Raw Cacao Powder has at least 33% more Arginine, the aphrodisiac-like amino acid believed by body builders to build muscle and aid in recovery.

The Raw Food Diet

The raw food diet is as much a life-style as an eating plan; a naturalistic approach which excludes, in addition to cooked and animal foods, processed and refined ingredients.

In the ever-hungry quest for new fads and health panaceas, the raw food diet, with adherents such as Woody Harrelson and Donna Karan, is growing in mainstream popularity. Unlike many other bandwagons however, raw foods (also referred to as ‘living foods'), offer unarguable health benefits and one can reap rewards even as a 50% dabbler. To be a 100% extremist takes commitment, discipline and education and is best introduced gradually to avoid the overwhelm of inevitable detoxification.

A food is essentially ‘raw' if it is kept below 116 degrees Fahrenheit (46 degrees centigrade), the temperature above which enzymes are destroyed. Eating raw food ensures an opulent intake of nutrients, fibre, healthy oils and life-giving enzymes. Raw food is much more easily digested, taking half to a third of the time of cooked food, around 24-36 hours compared to 40-100 hours. Raw vegetables and fruits, are also predominantly alkaline so help to optmize the pH balance of the body (around 60-80% alkaline foods being recommended for a healthy internal environment resistant to disease).

Sprouts, raw juices and Superfoods are favoured in a raw food diet, and dehydrating ‘ovens' effectively concentrate the flavour of certain raw foods to assist in the creation of a mind-boggling array of as-cooked dishes. I've eaten a raw food pizza that unbelievably contained no wheat, no cheese and no cooked ingredients! It tasted delicious and I was stumped to figure out what it was actually made of!

Raw Power

Raw plant foods are healthy, regenerative, cleansing, energising, predominantly alkaline, and packed with vitamins, minerals, healthy oils, enzymes and antioxidants that promote health, beauty and longevity. As well as enhancing digestion and protecting against aging and disease, a raw diet has noted weight loss benefits and promotes clear, beautiful skin.

The benefit of raw food becomes even more apparent in view of the effects cooking can have on constituents in food

The Effects of Cooking

Arthur Baker writes in Awakening Our Self-Healing Body, ‘Overly cooked foods literally wreck our body. They deny needed nutrients to the system since heat alters foodstuffs such that they are partially, mostly, or wholly destroyed. Nutrients are coagulated, deaminized, caramelized and rendered inorganic and become toxic and pathogenic in the body.'

The indigestible end products of cooked foods can linger in the gut, clogging the intestines and interfering with healthy elimination. They can cause a build-up of toxins, mutagens and carcinogens. Carbohydrates ferment, proteins putrefy and fats become rancid, creating free radicals that enter the blood stream.

Lipufuscin, the ‘aging pigment', is an example of a waste product created from damaged proteins and fats. It accumulates in the skin and nervous system and is visible as brown ‘liver spots' on the skin and eyes.

Toxic by-products and excess free radicals from cooked foods can weaken the immune system and accelerate the aging process.

Enzymes

Cooking destroys enzymes in our food. These delicate, heat sensitive proteins can destabilise at temperatures as low as 115 degrees Fahrenheit, hence even light steaming can render them inactive.

Enzymes, so abundant in a raw food diet, are highly functional catalysts involved in various health-regulating tasks in the body, such as breaking down food in digestion, delivering nutrients, carrying away toxic wastes and strengthening the endocrine and immune system. All living cells contain enzymes which function in cooperation with other minerals. As there is not an unlimited supply of enzymes, eating them in our food lifts the burden off organs to produce digestive enzymes which allows a greater use of enzymes for other metabolic purposes, freeing up more energy for the performance of other tasks.

Nutrients

In cooking food we can loose up to 97% of water-soluble vitamins (B and C) and 40% of fat-soluble vitamins (namely A, D, E and K).

Proteins

Heat denatures proteins, modifying their molecular structure and rendering them unusable. The bacteria in the gut feeds upon undigested proteins that tend to putrefy, giving rise to toxins. Raw foods provide healthy, readily available protein in greater supply without unwanted residue.

Fats

As oils are heat, light and air sensitive, heating can destroy the goodness of the and can alter molecules generating toxins and free radicals. Unrefined oils that are cold-pressed contain all their natural healthful substances (olive oil for example is rich in phytonutrients, flaxseed oil a great source of omega-3 fatty acids and so on). They should be kept refrigerated in dark sealed containers.

Fibre

Fibre is essential for health and helps to flush out the intestines, scrubbing them clean and aiding elimination. With cooked food fibre becomes a soft substance, loosing its brush-like quality. It can partially rot, ferment and putrefy in the gut, causing toxins, gas and heartburn.

Super Raw

Eating Superfoods enhances a raw food diet even further. Superfoods are the most potent, antioxidant rich, nutrient dense, disease fighting, anti aging, beautifying, mood enhancing, immune boosting foods on the planet. Raw Superfoods ensure an optimum intake of nutrients and phytochemicals for ultimate health, beauty and longevity.

Raw Food Diets for Dogs and Cats

A raw food diet for dogs and cats is natural and species-appropriate. Not only does it provide a rich supply of nutrients, antioxidants and enzymes, but ensures a move away from low grade, inappropriate, highly processed and toxic ingredients found in commercial pet foods that can damage your pets health. If embarking on a homemade raw food diet for your pet (sometimes referred to as BARF - Biologically Appropriate Raw Food), thoroughly research the area first as nutritional balance is essential.

David Wolf & Dr Mercola on Inflamation PDF Print E-mail

David "Avocado" Wolfe has been an advocate of raw food for 16 years. He is a world authority on raw foods and superfoods and coaches Hollywood celebrities and business people on nutrition and wellness.

A field researcher in the most literal sense, David studies and conducts his research while traveling all over the world.

"I have been into the Amazon, into the jungles of Costa Rica, into the jungles of Mexico, into the jungles of Indonesia, all through Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, all over…" David says.

A good portion of the information on nutrition, some of which we will discuss in this interview, is actively being suppressed by multibillion dollar industries that do not want you to know the truth. They seek to discredit much of it because they want you to opt for their expensive drug solutions instead, which nearly always come with potentially toxic side effects.

But David and I are here to tell you that there are natural options to almost every health problem or condition you'll ever face.

One of the primary components of many disease processes is chronic inflammation.

The conventional approach to treat inflammation typically involves taking some type of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, like Vioxx -- which was taken off the market years ago, but only after it had killed more than 60,000 people.

These drugs do absolutely nothing to treat the cause of the inflammation in your body, AND may deteriorate your health even further as most of them have side effects and cause additional health problems, some of which are potentially lethal.

The Self-Healing Revolution

David was originally deeply embedded in the traditional medical system, growing up as the son of two medical doctors.

"When I was very, very young, my Mom always told me, "If you lose your health, you've lost everything you've got. You've got to maintain your health no matter what," David says.

"I began to see that eating oranges straight off a tree and walking around barefoot when I was a kid, really made me feel good."

That self-discovery activated his search for knowledge.

"I literally spent the last 22 year of my life on the cutting edge of what is possible via supplements, herbalism, food, superfoods, right positive thinking, etcetera," David says.

Many people still do not realize that one of the leading causes of death in the US is the conventional medical system.

This fact is in large part invisible, because when a person dies from a heart attack caused by a drug, such as Vioxx, that death is not attributed to that drug. It's simply listed as "a heart attack."

Those who are paying closer attention are beginning to see this truth however, and are also beginning to realize that the answer to their health problems is not drugs, but lifestyle. If you're reading this newsletter, chances are you are in this category.

I can't stress enough how important it is to realize that most of the health problems and diseases you may encounter in your life can be treated and overcome without resorting to synthetic drugs.

In this interview, David tells the story of how he healed himself from chronic pain using yoga – despite the fact that all of his doctors, chiropractors, and osteopaths told him he had a mechanical problem in his spine that was causing chronic inflammation and pain.

"I completely healed myself using natural approaches," David says.

"I can do everything today. So, in spite of the sincere opinions of very qualified health professionals, I still was able to go beyond the information I was getting, and actually heal myself. And I want to put that out there for everybody.

You may get sincere advice. But, it may be sincerely wrong advice.

Be open. Be aware that solutions are out there."

Most physicians are well-intentioned and truly believe that they're doing what's appropriate, and it's what they use for themselves and their family. The sad reality is that most of them have not done independent, objective research to find alternatives that work based on natural principles.

When was the Last Time You Walked Barefoot?

"I want to start off by talking about the barefoot revolution," David says.

"If there is a local park or a beach nearby where you can easily get your shoes off and take a walk, this is really powerful in terms of helping you deal with inflammation of your ankles, knees, hips, and, I would say, even lower back.

A lot of back problems, a lot of postural problems, are caused by wearing shoes that throw out our posture in different directions, and they also make your toes limp. Your toes lose their ability to grip. They lose their strength by the wearing of shoes."

Most shoes emulate a cast in that they do not allow your foot to articulate properly.

In terms of inflammation, shoes also block the beneficial electromagnetic radiation of the earth, which actually has an anti-inflammatory effect. According to David, about 30 studies performed by Clint Ober over the past 12 years reveal this.

"The studies indicate we can just touch the earth with our bare feet or our bare skin; sit down on the grass, and the earth actually releases anti-inflammatory electromagnetic radiation," David says. "This helps to draw out inflammation, in particular of your lower extremities: your feet, our ankles, knees, and hips."

My own understanding of this phenomenon is that it's not caused so much by the electromagnetic radiation but rather from the transfer of free electrons from the earth; a grounding effect that is, in my understanding, one of the most potent antioxidants we know of.

Unfortunately, few people ever walk barefoot anymore to experience it.

According to David, it takes about 80 minutes for the free electrons from the earth to reach your blood stream and transform your blood.

"This is what Clint's research has been showing," David says.

"We actually did this at the Longevity Conference. We showed, within an hour and 20 minutes, how people's blood profiles changed and improved just based on being grounded for an hour and 20 minutes."

Walking barefoot can also help ameliorate the constant irritation caused by EMFs and other types of radiation on your system from cell phones, computers and Wi-Fi on your system. By getting outside, barefoot, touching the earth, and allowing the excess charge in your body to discharge into the earth, you can alleviate some of the stress put on your system.

That is the grounding effect.

Walking barefoot outside and breathing fresh air are grossly neglected foundational health principles, as is having large amounts of your skin exposed to natural sunlight so you can optimize your vitamin D, which is another crucial component for treating inflammation.

Powerful Anti-Inflammatory Supplements

There are also several powerful anti-inflammatory supplements that can have immediate use. Here are a few of David's favorites:

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) – Its ability to neutralize inflammation is one of the greatest, and one of the most inexpensive, discoveries in this field.

MSM has been shown to break down the calcification that is frequently associated with chronic inflammation. In your arteries, it's called plaque, which leads to heart disease. These plaques are the root cause of inflammation.

"MSM helps dissolve these calcified deposits, turning it into calcium sulfate and making it soluble so your body can excrete it," David explains.

"The dosage of MSM has to be, in the beginning, maybe 2,500 mg per day. But really, you need to get up to 5,000 mg or 7,500 mg, and allow it to work over a period of months.

But don't ever want to start anything at a very high dosage. Move into it gently.

I have a good friend of mine who is now taking 30,000 mg of MSM for his rheumatoid arthritis, and that is the dosage he needs in order to feel complete relief of his pain."

Keep in mind that there may be side effects because MSM can detoxify you, and that may initially aggravate any condition you have. So increase dosage slowly to allow your body to adjust.

It's also important to note that if you're allergic to sulfa drugs, you may also have trouble with MSM because it is a type of sulfur.

MSM is not a drug however. It is a natural compound that exists in all trees and many plants. MSM is highly concentrated in aloe vera, for example, so you can also use natural aloe vera products that contain MSM in its natural form.

As with most supplements, quality is a concern when it comes to MSM as well. David recommends using wood pulp or tree-derived MSM.

Vitamin C -- A tremendous antioxidant, vitamin C is also anti-inflammatory, and is vital for rebuilding collagen and connective tissue. David recommends taking your MSM and vitamin C together if possible. Your best bet is to use a natural plant-based or botanical vitamin C supplement, such as acerola cherry, rosehip, or camu berry.

Keep in mind that high doses of vitamin C can cause diarrhea, so again, you'll want to start slowly and work your way up to about 3,000 mg per day. Certain newer supplements also use liposomal delivery systems that can increase their bioavailability.

Medicinal mushrooms – These include reishi mushrooms, cordyceps, Agaricus blazei and chaga mushrooms. According to David, medicinal mushrooms can help boost your immune system to break up longstanding infections.

There are also mushroom products available as powders that you can add to smoothies, protein shakes, tea and other beverages.

Mangosteen – Organic mangosteen rind is another superior antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties. The rind of mangosteen has been used in traditional medicinal systems in Southeast Asia, all the way into Indonesia, since the beginning of recorded history.

Interestingly, it specifically treats the pain and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

I have personally treated thousands of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, so this is an area I have a lot of experience with. Nearly all patients with autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis are deficient in vitamin D, so optimizing your vitamin D levels is also an essential part of treating this condition.

In addition, rheumatoid arthritis nearly always has an emotional component. Addressing and resolving these emotional wounds is therefore another vital part of the process.

In my experience, energy psychology tools such as the Emotional Freedom Technique is one of the most effective strategies to address this underlying emotional component, and will work synergistically with herbal- or supplemental therapies.

Sometimes, unless you address the basics, such as your emotions, the herbs and vitamins won't do much good. But once you include such simple basics as getting regular sun exposure and addressing your emotions, in addition to whatever supplements you choose, you can at times end up with what appears to be a miracle.

Astaxanthin – A seafood component extracted from algae, astaxanthin provides three unusual health benefits:

  1. Preventing sunburn (4mg dose)
  2. Eliminating cataracts and age-related macular degeneration
  3. Protection against radiation damage when flying in an airplane

It's a bit pricey, but can be extremely effective. A less expensive alternative is krill oil, which also contains astaxanthin, in addition to essential omega-3 fatssuch as eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA).

Cooling Inflammatory Conditions with Raw Foods

"Inflammation, of course, is "in flame" or "on fire,"" David explains, and there are also a large number of raw foods that can help "cool" the inflammatory response.

"One of my favorite tools to do that is vegetable juicing, particularly celery and cucumber juices.

Celery is very rich in electrolytes. It has a cooling effect on your body, which is really an anti-inflammatory effect. Cucumber does as well.

A simple juice is celery and cucumber. There is no sugar and it's an instant 'turn-on' for energy. It also has an instant drawing effect of toxins out of your system due to the chlorophyll present in the celery."

Fennel is another cooling plant suitable for juicing. Fennel juice is specifically implicated for headaches and migraines.

Dill is related to fennel, and both are very beneficial for producing breast milk in nursing women.

I am convinced, as is David, that nearly every health problem you face can be addressed using safe, natural, non-toxic strategies. So keep educating yourself to take control of your and your family's, health!

Thanks
